Some Thoughts
The process of
cataloging all of the Historical Society's holdings in a database will
require us to handle each piece. We will record facts about each
document. If we added a step to that process and scan each document
at the time that we record it, we will have an image of the document
within the database. This would require an additional investment of
time, technology and money but much less than if we were to go back and
digitize the collection at a later date, handling each piece
again. The additional investment would give us the ability to
preserve and provide community access to the collection without
endangering the fragile paper documents. Access could be fee based
either on our Website or on a CD Rom and could potentially provide
additional revenue for the Society. Take a look at some examples of
digital collections.
