Drummond
(Population: 1,007)
4 km from Grand Falls, route 108
Drummond is a beautiful and small country village with postcard appeal.
It is sweet all around.
This is essentially an agricultural village geared to potato harvesting. As far as the
eye can see, dells and cultivated fields grid the horizon.
Dotted with farms covering the landscape, fields combine into a natural fresco of rare
beauty. People here live in harmony with the earth and seasons.
Take the time to explore the surroundings on scenic country roads. In the summer, the
dells and flourishing fields offer a panoramic landscape, a harmonious symphony worthy of
a pastoral masterpiece. It is as though nature had put on its best attire to brush a
tableau in honour of rural life. This will simply captivate you.
Drummond is the birthplace of the famous jockey Ron Turcotte, Triple Crown champion of
horse racing, with his famous horse Secretariat. Mr.Turcotte still lives in the area.

About 1626, Olivier Roy married (1) Catherine Baudard, who gave him ten children. Then
Catherine died in December 1659, and Oliver Roy m. (2) Marie Pruneau, in
1660. Of this second union was born the eleventh child.

It is in the heart of this army corps that Antoine Roy made it to Canada, as an ordinary
soldier, assigned to the company of Capt. Froment. He carried the military surname
`Desjardins`.
He left La Rochelle on April 19th, 1665 aboard the sailer Le Vieux Simon, and he wen
ashore tw omonths later on the piers of Québec City, the 19th of June. He was part of the
avant-garde of the regiment sent by the King, formed of four companies commanded by the
Captains Petit. Froment, Chambly and La Tour.

Repentigny, Marie Delugre. Julien Talua killed Antoine Roy dit Desjardins when he
surprised him in bed with his wife, 10-07-1684, at Lachine. She was banished for life from
the Is. of Montreal for adultery. Their marriage was annulled , 29-09-1689. Ref:
Jette,p.1062. Julien Talua, condemned to capitol punishment, got himself consequently a
second hearing, and thereafter there is no follow up on him.
The
story of Antoine Roy dit Desjardins is an intriguing one for two reasons. The first is
that he is the ancestor of many people of French-Canadian origin living today. He and his
wife, Marie Major, had only one son, Pierre, but Pierre was to be married three times and
would father 19 children, 17 of whom would reach adulthood.
The Fate of Marie Major.
Marie
Major was now ruined because of the scandal of her husband's adultery and murder, and
because of continuing problems with creditors. She could no longer live in Batiscan. She
and Pierre left their farm and went to live in Quebec in poverty. They were sustained by
the small income of Pierre, only 15 years old in 1684, could derive from his work as a
cooper, the trade of his father.
Nothing
more is known of Marie until she entered the Hotel-Dieu, the Quebec hospital, on
16-11-1689, where she would die on Dec.8th. She was 52 years old.
Following
the custom of the time, it was likely that she was buried the next day, Dec.9th, in the
Cimetiere des Pauvres (Cemetary of the poor). Despite its name, the cemetary held the
emains of some of the rich and illustrious citizens of Quebec. Marie, buried in an
unmarked tomb, was not one of these.

Pierre, dit Desjardins, Roy (or Leroy) born ca. 1669, at Batiscan . He was listed in the
census of au rec 1700 at Mont-Louis, etablished at Kamouraska in 1696 or 1697. He was a
lieutenant in the Militia of Kamouraska in March,
1721. He was a barrelmaker and a carpenter.
Pierre was married at the age of 22 on 12 February, 1691 in the church of St.Pierre on the
Ile d'Orleans, northeast of Quebec, Canada. (ct 29-01 Giles Rageot) - to Marie-Anne Martin
daughter of Jocquim Martin and and Anne Charlotte Petit. Witnesses at the signing of the
marriage contract on 29-01-1691 was his godfather, Pierre Constant, a former neighbor and
a habitant of Batiscan since 1667. Constant was also the witness at the wedding.
Pierre and Marie-Anne would have ten children, one who died at the age of 15. Marie-Anne
would die in 1709 and on 25 Nov. 1710 Pierre would marry Angelique Autin daughter of
Francois et Marie Boucher. at Riviere Ouelle. Angelique would have 6 children. She died
somewhere between 1721 and 1726. On 30 October 1727 Pierre Jean Baptiste Roy m. at
Repenyigny on to Marie De Lugre daughter of Jacques Lugre and Catherine Gendreau. Marie

The Fate of Pierre.
Pierre Roy-Desjardins, son of Antoine, went to visit his old neighbor, Jacques Marchand in
Batiscan in June of 1691, to claim the inheritance as the sole heir of Antoine
Roy-Desjardins and Marie Major. At that time he was living at St.Pierre, Ile d'Orleans,
with his new wife, Marie-Anne Martin.
When considering the poor financial record of Antoine Roy-Desjardins, it is hard to
imagine that Pierre had any claim, but he did. Antoine and Marie Major had been married
under the communal estate settlement system. Under this system, the dowry that Marie
brought to the marriage was not subject to the debts incurred during the marriage. Pierre
as sole heir, therefore had a legal claim to this dowry of 300 pounds
Pierre was not ot receive this full amount, but an amicable agreement was reached with
Marchand. On 18-06-1691, Father Raffeix, S.J. of Cap-de-la- Madeleine, in the name of
Jacques Marchand, gave to Pierre the sum of 165 pounds. This agreement was contested by
Babie's widow, Jeanne Dandonneau, but in vain.

In the year of about 1657, Antoine Roy married a woman named Catherine Byot. This is a new
fact, which is found in no other published genealogy in Canada up to now. The young man
worked in the trade of cooper when he was united with his first wife, in his father's
manner. From this marriage came two children, both baptized in the church of
St.Jean-de-Joigny: first Jacques, presented to the baptismal fonts by Jacques Perdigon and
Marie Chachere, 05-11-1658; then Edmee, held over these same fonts by Edme Nau and Marie
Bourotte, 13-03-1660. At the first baptism, the parents of
Antoine Roy were still living. His mother died one year later, being buried at Joigny the
10-12-1659, and not the 20-12 as seen inthe Canadian texts. His father died a year and a
half after the second baptism, 06-12-1661. Both services were held at Joigny. Ref:

Marie
Major, Arr. 1668, born in the hamlet of St. Thomas-de-Touques, (Normandy ), in 1640,
daughter of Jean & Marguerite LaPele. She married Antoine Roy dit Desjardins,
11-09-1668, at Quebec.(c.06-09,m. LeConte), bringing with her estimated goods of 300
pounds. Ref: "Les Filles du Roi", S.Dumas,p.290.
During
the French Regime, the erection of the lands as a lordship, gave the owner, or landlord,
of the domain the power to execute justice on his lands, to establish a court and to name
officers; judge, fiscal procurator, court clerk and bailiff. Many of the Seigneurs oversaw
the power, especially those of the Island of Montreal, Notre-Dame-des-Anges, Beauport,
Beaupre and the Orleans Is. The seigneurie court of Montreal & N.D.-des-Anges executed
their powers in the high justice, at least in the 17th. century. The first condemned,
Julien Talua, to capitol punishment, in 1684, for having killed Antoine roy dit
Desjardins..... Ref:"Les Filles du Roi", S.Dumas,p.102. Can be found;A.N.Q.
Liasses 60-61 folio nos.2753-3232.
Julien
Talua killed Antoine Roy dit Desjardins when he found him with his wife, 10-07-1684, at
Lachine. She was banished for life from the Is. of Montreal for adultery. Their marriage
was annulled , 29-09-1689. Ref: Jette,p.1062.
Julien
Talua, condemned to capitol punishment, got himself consequently a second hearing, and
thereafter there is no follow up on him.
From
Bourgogne came to us Antoine Roy dit Desjardins, son of Olivier, a wet cooper, and of
Catherine Boderge. He came in the ranks of the Carignan Reg; Froment Co., in 1665.
Doubtlessly knowing that his army time was nearing end, he obtained a grant situated in
the seigneurie of Batiscan, owned by the Jesuits, in 1667. The following year, in Quebec,
he marries a King's daughter, Marie Major, daughter of Jean, doorman, (more or less), for
the barony of Hanqueville-en -Vexin, and of Marguerite LePele. She is orphaned of both
father and mother and brings with her a " hope chest" estimated at 300 pounds.
Antoine adds to the communion his allocation of veteran of 100 pounds.
Sadly,
the couple were not rolling in gold. In 1681, Antoine had only cleared five arpents. He
accumulates debts and thrown in jail for insolvency. He leaves for Montreal to practice
his trade oe wet cooper.
In
July of 1684, a residant of Lachine, Julien Talua dit Vendamont, surges to the magistrate
judge Migeon de Branssat, at Montreal, and tells him that he just killed Antoine Roy, whom
he surprised in bed with his wife, (that will blow a quiet evening of t.v. everytime!),
The killer was condemned to the capitol punishment, then released while awaiting a second
hearing. We then lose all trace of him.
The
Roy/Martin couple had only one child, a son , Pierre, who in 1691 married Marie-Anne
Martin, dau. of Joachim and of Anne-Charlotte Petit, who will give him nine kids. He
fathered four more as aresult of two other marriages.
Ref: La Presse, Montreal, Saturday, 18-02-1995, Sect.H,p.8.
Antoine Roy, illiterate, bought the grant of
Francois
Fafard,22-12-1669, but did not seem to work it. In 1684, Antoine was killed by Julien
Talua dit Vendamont in Montreal when he found him in bed with his wife, Anne Godby
(Gaudry?).
Ref: Seigneurs et Colons de Ste.Anne-de-la-Perade,p.138.
It was the month of July 1684, when a certain
Talus-Vendamont
surprised his wife, Anne Godeby, catching her in the act with their boarder, Antoine Roy
dit Desjardins, in the couple's dwelling at Lachine near Montreal.
Vendamont
killed Desjardins and went to give himself up to the magistrate of Montreal.
At the
trial, it seems that the adulteresse was proven by the neighbors testimony as the woman
Godeby was condemned "to be perpetually banished from the Island of Montreal, and in
case she did return, the awaitng punishment would be flogging and put in chains."
As for
Vendamont, he admitted the murder and was condemned to the capital punishment but on
appealing the death sentence and only 13 days after the end of the trial at Montreal, the
Conseil Sovereign accepted his request and ordered his transfer to the prison of Quebec;
one month later, the Conseil broke the sentence handed down by the magistrate of Montreal
and decreed that a revisioned trial be held in Quebec before the tribunal of the Conseil,
in the month of March of 1685.
Several
days later, the Consseil permitted Vendamont to leave the prison of Quebec and lodge with
a shoemaker on rue St.Louis, telling him however not to go any more than three lieux [1
lieu = approx.1 mile] from the place. But a month later, the Conseil acceeded to a new
demand by Vendamont to return to Montreal, without escort and in liberty.
When
the date came for the second trial, Vendamont did not show up and we never again heard
speak of him in the colony. From all appearances, the Conseil did not look for him either.
His
ex-wife, the infidel Godeby, finished her days in Quebec, without incident.

They are a little repetitive, but ver interesting.
When my ancestor left the Quebec and Montreal area, he left a number of siblings behind
him. Three of my mother's sisters corresponded with one of their descendants named Hudon,
who lived in Montreal. This was some time ago, and I only recently discovered one set of
letters that my aunt had. She would have been 100 to 101 years old today, and the letters
were written in the 30s or 40s and/or 50's

I tried to send this message to you by e-mail but it kept coming back undeliverable.
Searching for info on the Desjardins name is quite difficult. The following has not
been verified by official documents till I get to my husband's great-grandparents. It is
what I have researched and found to be a possibility. Much of the information is in french
and I tried to translate as best I could. There are some words in french that I can't even
find in my french dictionary. I believe my husband's ancestor starts with Antoine
Desjardins. He was originally from Bourgogne, France and arrived in Québec in June of
1665. He established himself in the surrounding area of Batiscan. On September 11, 1668,
he married Marie Major. Antoine died at Lachine on July 10, 1684, leaving one son, Pierre.
I came across several Desjardins in the "Dictionnaire Génealogique des Famille du
Québec" by Jette. 1983 - Library Number: 929.J 58d. On Page
342, you will find information on Pierre Desjardins and Anne Brien. . In researching my
husband's
line of Desjardins, I can't locate what part of Canada they came from. I know they came to
the U.S. before 1900's and first settled in Van Buren,
ME and then Old Town, ME. Some of them drifted to Waterville and Lewiston area. Husband's
great-grandparents were Joseph Desjardins & Apolline (Pauline) Beaulieu of Van Buren,
ME. I have only 4 of their children's names: Edward (Edouard), mar. twice (1) Délia
(Adéline) or (Addie) Cyr, 8-30-1903 at St. Joseph's Church in Old Town, ME. (2) Lena
Cunningham, 3-10-1921,
also at St. Joseph's in Old Town. Lena was also the widow of Jarvis Cunningham. Her
parents were Charles & Olive Perry. Clémentine,(my husband's grandmother) mar.
Napoleon Loubier (Lubier), 8-27/30-1886 at St. Francis de Sales Church in Waterville, ME.
They had 22 children (5 sets of twins) - only one set survived (my husband's mother was in
that set). Odélie, widow of Onésime Landry, married Napoleon Loubier, 8-9-1941 in
Waterville, ME; George, remained in Old Town. I don't know when or who he married. I
know he had 4 sons and 2 daughters. The following items that I will list come from
different sources: From "Your Ancient Canadian Family Ties" (1) Des Jardins -
